16 Pieces of turf-Problem solving.

Unit 1.2 Place value and estimating
The problem

Pieces of turf are 1 m long by 0.5m wide. Each piece costs £3.79.

a) Estimate the cost of turf required to cover these spaces.

  1. 9.6 m by 2.4 m
  2. 6.2 m by 1.9 m
  3. 4.4 m by 2.1 m

b) Use a calculator to work out each answer.

The solution

Solution: 1m x 0.5 m = 0.5m2 and £3.79 is rounded to 4.

9.6 by 2.4m rounded is 10m x 2m = 20m2.

0.5 m2 =£4.

20m2 =a

0.5m2 x a = 20 x 4

a = 20 x 40.5= 800.5 = £160
